Another name for Rolfing® is Structural Integration Therapy (SI), the original name given by its founder Dr. Ida Rolf. This is a hands-on treatment with a wholistic approach, rather than looking at the body as a soft machine with individual components to be examined separately, we acknowledge their uniqueness but focus on their relationship to each other. We are striving for the body to be integrated within itself and in the ever-relentless field of gravity we reside; in standing, breath and movement. With this achieved you will find simultaneously both lift and grounding. A phenomenon that effects the whole being and can be experienced; within the body, in appearance, energetically and emotionally.
Structural Integrations is often mistaken as a type of massage or loosely described as bodywork; I would challenge this idea to be more invasive. To do this we must first have a deeper understanding of Fascia itself, the target of our practice. Fascia is; tough but pliable, elastic yet resolute, it covers every aspect of our bodies while simultaneously penetrates each system down to the bone. So as all bodywork, works “on” the body, we should look at Rolfing® as wholistically working throughout all of the bodies physical systems i.e., the bones, organs, nerves, blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, muscles and fascia. But Rolfing® is so much more than just working on the physical body, releasing resistance in the fascia, and bringing the body into a physical state of uprightness. It is also a way of finding ourselves in our own bodies.

As a Rolfer® we don’t want to just work with the physical body. But, to work withing the framework of Somatic (mental) Experience as well; we want clients to feel into their bodies. Rather than relaxing away from the experience and falling asleep during the process. We encourage the person to draw attention to their bodies, to the feeling of what was, to what can be. We invite our client to not just breath but to witness the experience of their breath. To not just be, but to participate in their state of being. By drawing attention to ones’ body, we can begin to change patterns caused from their environment, society, physical and emotional trauma, and thought. All of which, can have its own lasting effect on our structures. We realize that working within these systems, we can transform the entire body. Allowing it to find its most adaptable place in the world, and in gravity; allowing our bodies to live within a place of ease.
